Surviving Language Training

I’m on week…7-ish of my Bangla language training. It’s all starting to run together now. Some days I feel like I’m rocking the language; other days, I feel like I am floundering. However, a couple of times my teachers have given us a photo and ask us to tell a story about it, and I’ve been slightly impressed that I can actually say a lot using the language I’ve learned. I am starting to be able to read the script much faster, and I can sorta kinda express many of my thoughts if given enough time to muddle through.

Bangla language itself feels mixed up to English speakers like myself. Instead of saying “I wake up at 7am,” it’s something like “7am at, I sleep from get up.” Or “I play with my cat” is “I my cat with play.” And then doing it all in a different script. “আমি আমার বিড়াল সাথে খেলি”. My brain sometimes feels like it is being tied in knots.

I’ve found that A) sleeping a full night, B) getting out and about with friends and C) talking to my cat in Bangla have all been beneficial in this language learning process. I love my other classmates – they are patient, and we laugh a lot in class. I often bring my cat into the conversation, and another student will bring an elephant or another funny topic into play. It’s fun flexing both our creativity and trying out new words and phrases. Even when I’m feeling like I’ll never get things right, I enjoy class immensely.

It’s Fall in the DC area and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to get out of town to see some foliage. Last weekend I went to Shenandoah National Park and Great Falls National Park. It was nice just getting outside in fresh air and seeing some lovely sites. Plus exercise is never a bad thing!

My diplo-cat is super helpful while I’m learning Bangla. He keeps me company and snuggles and plays with me. And gnaws on my Bangla homework. In return, I feed him and cater to his every whim. It’s a pretty good trade-off.

Only 21 more weeks of Bangla to go. We have our first progress assessment the week of Thanksgiving, a little under a month from now. I’m pretty sure I will be ready but I definitely need to work on getting the correct words to come out of my mouth….সমস্যা নেই!
